Day 2 - Friday April 21, 2017 - Naoshima

Today we’re off to Naoshima, one of the two ‘Art Islands’ we’re here to visit (and Teshima tomorrow).

Japan Guide – Naoshima

NY Times – Naoshima

After breakfast, we head to the ferry terminal for the 20 minute ride to Naoshima. There is a (limited) local bus service on the island but the first thing we discover is that the ferry company and the bus company must have conspired to make their services as uncoordinated as possible. Tomorrow on Teshima, it’s even worse and we conclude that it wouldn’t be possible to make the ferry and bus timetables any more uncoordinated if you tried. Nonetheless, we managed to get around, although with rather more walking from place to place than we had intended. None of the museums permit photography and all tend to be “architecture as art”, though there were a few interesting exhibits. On Teshima, the Teshima Art Museum (building) is the exhibit (of which more tomorrow). We had lunch in a restaurant at the Benesse Museum; Anne-Margaret’s bento box was ornate and good but it must be said that my tempura was decidedly average.
