Day 5 - Sunday October 29, 2017 - Kyoto Weather

Kyoto Weather

Posted on Sunday October 29, 2017

The weather forecast says we’re in for heavy rain today. The forecast for the rest of the week is much better but today may well be a wash out.

It’s 5.30 am and quiet. We can hear what sounds like a temple bell tolling every minute or so, somewhere off in the distance. As expected, the bed is pretty comfortable but I was still awake very early.

Walking back from dinner last night, the building on the corner across from the apartment caught our eye. It looks rather nicer in design than the often utilitarian ones you see – though the ground floor does house the local donburi (cheap eats, buy-your-ticket-at-the-machine) restaurant. On the opposite corner, closest to the apartment is a dress shop — A-M was very taken with the dresses, particularly the feathery creation third from the left….

As forecast, it’s been pretty wet and miserable all day. It wasn’t too bad to start with – just drizzling, but it got increasingly wet as the day progressed. Not much choice but to try and stay out of the rain. Breakfast at the Illy Cafe down at the station, a stop in Starbucks for another coffee, take the subway up to Karasuma, stay in the underground passageways to exit 16, which takes you into Daimaru (large department store) and specifically the food hall, through the food hall (full of amazing stuff – some completely unidentifiable but all beautifully presented), out the back, up the stairs and turn right to head towards the Nishiki Market. All the way through the Market (stopping for a red bean snack and a cabbage, bacon and potato snack), then left up the covered section of Terimachi-dori before stopping for another coffee. Up to the end, across from City Hall and scoot down into the underground passageway to get the subway back down to the station. Exit underground as far north as you can before walking the last block home in the rain, stopping at the supermarket on the way.

We’ll see what happens at dinner time. We may try the okonomiyaki round the corner that we couldn’t get into last night and, failing that, one of the other places or the donburi cheap eats place on the corner.

No problem getting in to the okonomiyaki restaurant around the corner. Different and very tasty …
